The matter will be tried in the courts, without interference from the crown.

The Varangians will pay a weregild to the family in recompense. Turning the matter over to the courts will pacify the nobles, although the Varangians are unlikely to be pleased and may need financial persuasion to overlook the matter. Admitting fault and paying weregild will essentially absolve the Varangians of responsibility and keep their loyalty strong, but the Dynatoi will know who have the greater value. As ever when the truth is muddled and politics moves behind the scenes, the truth is not especially relevant. The Varangians protest their innocence all the more, and are quite convinced that you will not allow this farce to continue. They want the guards in question turned over to justice, the penalty for which is assuredly death. All you know is that some of your guard are wounded and the second son of a minor house is dead. The Varangians say the Dynatoi drew swords first. The Dynatoi insist the Varangians attacked first. The notherners enjoy their drink like most hot-blooded men, harsh words were exchanged, and a brawl ensued. It is fair to say that the relationship between the two is not entirely amicable, the Dynatoi resenting the close access to the royal family and the privleged position that the foreigners enjoy. All seems well, until the Varangians get into a scuffle with some the local Dynatoi. The barbarians beyond the borders remain largely unknown, the Emporoi firmly sticking to more profitable excursions in the interior. For the moment ignoring them seems to be working to make their presence a non-issue. The barbaroi within Elysia's borders likewise settle, doing their best to scrape by as outsiders. Fortunately a major urban expansion is in the works, and soon the local situation should be much improved. As it stands it means the most central settlements of the new Elysian nation are beginning to find their feet, with the exception of Nea Aleksandreia. It does make organising the new taxes that are being collected from Alouion somewhat more challenging for the other bureaucrats, but that is all. It causes some gossip among the court, but the most notable effect is that the clergy in administration do not work with their prior enthusiasm, instead turning their attention entirely towards matters concerning the church. They find your decision to simply leave the barbaroi alone on their land quite baffling. Your decisions do not make you popular with either the Emporoi or the Presbyteroi, the merchants believing you do not appreciate their efforts and generosity in public works and the church feeling you do not value their work as much as you ought.
